Panaji, March 18: A 61-year-old Catholic priest was found murdered in his room by parishioners who broke open his door on Saturday morning in South Goa.

This comes in the wake of a series of unexplained and largely undetected destruction of crosses in this small state, which has a 25 per cent Catholic minority. But there were no indications of communal or political connections to the crime, even though news of the crime caused concern across the small state.

Father Eusebio Ferrao of the St Francis Xavier Church in Macasana village, around 12 km from the South Goa headquarters town and commercial capital of Margao, was last seen by the parish house’s mess boy, who served the priest and his two visitors who had arrived on Friday evening.

Prima facie evidence suggests that the priest was smothered with a pillow. His assailants also stuffed a towel in his mouth.
