Bishop arrested like a thief
The All India Christian Council has expressed anguish over the arrest of Samuel Thomas, the Bishop of the Kota-headquartered Emmanuel Mission International, from Noida near Delhi on Thursday. The arrest, carried out by the Rajasthan police at "gun-point", was part of a witch hunt which had been going on in the State for the past one month in the name of a book, it stated.
"Bishop Thomas has been arrested like a common criminal for no fault of his. The controversial book `Haqeeqat' was neither authored nor published by him or his father Archbishop M. A. Thomas. The Mission and its people have been the target of a hate campaign unleashed by the Sangh Parivar/Vishwa Hindu Parishad for the past one decade," said Abraham Mathai, general secretary of the All India Christian Council, in a statement from Mumbai.
Both Archbishop Thomas, who is a Padma Shri, and Bishop Samuel Thomas have been on the run since the furore in February over the book, which radical Hindu groups had spotted in the EMI bookstore in Kota. Their bail plea is pending before the Rajasthan High Court while a decision on the bail application from three other senior functionaries of EMI, arrested in Kota last month, has been deferred by the High Court till March 20.
The book in question was not even in the banned list, pointed out Dr.Mathai. It was written as an answer to the book "A Bunch of Thoughts" authored by M. S. Golwalkar, the late ideologue of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he said. "As EMI has nothing to do with `Haqeeqat', authored by one M. G. Mathew, and published by Truth and Life Publications, the motive behind the registration of non-bailable warrants against Archbishop Thomas and his son is harassment of a Christian group which is involved in running dozens of orphanages and leprosy homes," he charged.
People owing allegiance to sangh parivar target pious people -however insignificant -because The facists think that they tend to influence the hearts and minds of - in their words- the gullibles in there spheres which is ananathema to the hate based idelogy /philosophy of Sangh Parivar.
